85% of fire deaths happen when in bed from smoke inhalation due to smoldering fires.

Three U.S. States have banned ionization detectors as a stand alone sensor.

On a local level, Palo Alto, California and Albany, California have passed laws outlawing the use of ionization alarms unless used in conjunction with photoelectric alarms.

Are dual sensor smoke alarms better?

Dual-sensor smoke detectors combine ionization and photoelectric technology to detect both flaming and smoldering fires, offering you the best protection and saving you the hassle of installing two separate smoke detectors. But you may still need to install carbon monoxide detectors, if appropriate for your home or you may already have ionizations sensors but should install photoelectric ones next to the existing sensors for increased protection.
